Porter Muhammad Hassan worked for Laila Peak which is one of the seventh heaven of adventure tourism companies in Pakistan. Worse the Porter Muhammad Hassan was not equipped properly for the mission which added some extra level of jeopardy. His gear was rather old and inadequate for the climbing expedition of such a mountain as K2 as described by the eye-witnesses. This climbing gear, suit and O2 mask he wore were kind of low-quality products. His colleagues advised him many a times to turn back but as everyone is into the firm for their financial needs and responsibility towards their family needs, Muhammad Hassan continued. He understood all the consequences, but for him, to earn some money it was worthy the danger even to die. This is a decision which may be required frequently by most of the porters.

Despite being outgunned and outmanned as well as lacking experience Porter Muhammad Hassan continued the attack. It is this desire to do his job to the letter while ensuring that he caters for his family that would plunge him into a bleak and very needless fate.

That was the idea behind the movie The Challenges of K2 and it tells about the horrible Fateful Day.

K2 also referred to as the “Savage Mountain” is one of the most difficult and dangerous mountain climbing spots on the planet. It has difficult and dangerous cliffs and also poor climate, even for the professional mountaineers it is a dangerous quest. For Porter Muhammad Hassan who never had appropriate gears and training the test was certainly out of this world.

On July 27, 2023, at around 2 AM, climbing teams started their bid to reach the top. Porter Muhammad Hassan was busy already being on front line, helping the rope-fixing team as per his call of duty. Some response during the climb, the group had faced several avalanches, but they all were small some, and both teams continued with the climb. However the final downfall of Porter Muhammad Hassan would occur when he tripped while assisting with the ropes. His O2 mask fell apart—this is a critical gear when at such high altitude. He was noted by other climbers to use poor quality gear which was started by his fellow climbers in K2 including Lakpa Sherpa and cameraman Philip.

As Porter Muhammad Hassan tried to go on something became very clear to him and that was the limitations of his equipment’s. This was already a bad climbing equipment and it let him down. The thickness of the snow and freezing temperature of the air at such a high altitude including shortage of oxygen made it extremely difficult to survive without a good O2 mask.

Laila peak responsibility and tour operating companies Liabilities

However, it should be noted that this tragedy is not in any way in the Porter Muhammad Hassan. Laila Peak has most of the blame for sending an ill-equipped and untrained porter into what is essentially a fatal situation. Such incident provoke questions about the procedures of the adventure tourism in Pakistan and the companies offering this kind of service.

In this case, one realizes that the Laila Peak did not make Porter Muhammad Hassan for such a mission in a way that guarantees that he had all the necessary equipment. The fact he was inexperienced should have been a clear pointer that he was not suitable for the job and yet no one took it seriously. He was not only placed into one of the most violence-prone zones worldwide, but lacked sufficient backing too. This gross negligence led to loss of the young man’s life as found in the case of Muhammad Hassan.

A call to justice awaits companies like Laila Peak hence the need for the company to be prosecuted. Adventure tourism is one of the most profitable businesses in the world which impacts negatively on local employees such as Porter Muhammad Hassan. While foreigners spend thousands of dollars to conquer K2 same treatment is not offered to porters most of whom are paid a few hundred dollars, some of whom are sent to extremely dangerous location with inadequate gear and training.

Doing as One is Bidden and Running Away When Death is looming

Even more sad in this story is that Porter Muhammad Hassan was left by everyone around him. Though, any kind of assistance from others was very unwanted at the summit, climbers tried to help him for a while after this slip. But when they found him alive, but paralyzed, they did leave him for hanging at the tree with a rope. The next three hours Porter Muhammad Hassan was hanging in the air, gradually freezing and asphyxiating.

While Muhammad Hassan try to survive many foreign climbers crossed him and other climbers and continue their way to K2 peak. They decided to perform their duty by aiming the spotlight on their bull’s eye instead of rescuing a man that appeared to be in so much pain. Of course, Porter Muhammad Hassan is no more, it could have been prevented. The summit could World Trade Organization could have wait. But in the race of conquering K2, his life was eliminated, meaning he is a mere history in the climbing of the mountain.

Once climbers started stepping over the dead body of Porter Muhammad Hassan to get to K2, ¨the summit¨ the human aspect of climbing was km, annihilated. This was not only an act of recklessness that occurred—not at all, this was a failure in moral fiber.

The Injustice of Adventure Tourism in Pakistan

The death of Porter Muhammad Hassan is a sad case that can be linked to a general problem of adventure tourism in Pakistan. Local porters, who are main workforce in these expeditions, get very little wages and are abounded into deadly conditions with poor facilities.

The foreign climbers and companies which undertake such activities reap a lot of benefits and gains from the exercises, and yet the local people who risk their lives to serve these purposes are poorly remunerated. In fact many of the porters such as Porter Muhammad Hassan are often stretched to the limit, willing to die for the other person. On the other hand, the foreign companies are still allowed to import their own porters to reduce the requirement of Pakistani porters hence a threat to the livelihood of the Pakistani porters.

What Must Be Done?

Before coming to justice then there must be identification of Porter Muhammad Hassan’s role. It was the reason his name should join the list of climbers who made it to top of K2 on the 27 July because many of them used what he helped fixing on the ropes. It also requires that his family be compensated for the loss as well as a compensation for the loss incurred by them. Regarding the hiring challenges, the management of Laila Peak should be blamed for its negligence while there should be an investigation conducted about the company.

In addition, native porter security has to consider also a major factor that should not be overlooked by the local adventure tourism firms of Pakistan. Companies must make sure that all the employees undergo the necessary safety training as well as use the necessary and sufficient safety equipment they should be made to adhere to the international safety standards. This will be effective in preventing other such incidents in future like that one which cost the life of Porter Muhammad Hassan.

Another area that must also be considered for a check is the behavior of foreign companies investing in Pakistan. Most of them take advantage of local employees, and offer them wages that are way below what they offer to their clients. Sometimes even the climbers themselves are foreigners, and they carry their porters right from their country, thus excluding locals all together. This not only displaces Pakistani porters out of their working capacities but also provides companies free reign to go on with their wrong doings.

Justice for Muhammad Hassan & Pakistani Porters

Therefore, to bring justice to Porter Muhammad Hassan, structural transformation of the adventure tourism industry is inevitable. Such companies as the Laila Peak have to be made to answer for their actions and local porters need to be protected through legislation. Porter Muhammad Hassan died in order to serve people’s goals, and his death should not be a waste.

Tragedy of Porter Muhammad Hassan should act as a wakeup call. No man’s life is, therefore, worthy the blame for glorying in such an endeavor; the safety of those who support such expeditions must not be compromised. For Muhammad Hassan’s family, and for every porter who dares his life in the mountains, there should be justice, truth, and justice.
